Sunday nights were the worst for me. It had become a trigger for my anxiety and depression. Absolutely dreading Monday morning at a toxic job with a long commute. As a single mom, there was never enough time in my weekend. Never enough time with my kids. And zero time for me to relax and recharge.
I was overwhelmed, exhausted, stressed and there was never enough money at the end of each month.
I tried my hand at a few different network marketing companies where I’d end up spending more than I earned. The tax breaks were great at the end of the year and I loved the products but I probably spent more throughout each month.
Going back to college was my next step. But this added more stress to my life, cut deeply into my precious time with my children and increased my debt load. Plus a degree in business was only going to keep me in the corporate world, I already hated and was sucking the life out of my soul, week after week.
I remembered praying each night for a way to support my family through avenues I’m passionate about and allow me more time with my family.
A true introvert at heart with a passion for writing, for single moms and for helping women who were feeling the same sense of dread every Sunday night, God led me down a path of writing, sharing and helping other women in 2013.
Working from home doesn’t have to be a dream and it doesn’t have to be an endless scam. Which is exactly what I would run into with almost every “work at home” opportunity I would find. It was frustrating and disheartening.
I have put together a huge list of jobs, links, and ideas below. Some are work from home and some are side jobs. Keep in mind that many of these jobs do not pay the kind of money that will replace your full-time job. If your skills are in IT or the medical field, then you have an opportunity for much higher paying work at home jobs. Transcription work and working as a virtual assistant, for the most part, require certification but there are free online programs on the web. This is not to disappoint you.
In my opinion, the number one work from home job that ANYONE can start is blogging. It does take time and consistent work. But if it’s something you’re passionate about, then it doesn’t feel like work and eventually (if you do your research) you can start earning a real income from it. It’s a dream you can turn into a reality.
Look through the list below and if you find that any of these companies should be removed based on a bad experience, please let me know. Or if you’ve worked for one of these companies or currently do work for them and you love it, please share your experience in the comments below.
I have resources here if you wish to start blogging along with a list of every possible thing you’ll need to eventually turn your blog into a profitable business for your family.
Comprehensive List of Work from Home Jobs & Side Jobs for Extra Money
AFFILIATE MARKETING/NICHE SITES – $$$
Niche sites are simply websites and blogs that are focused on a particular topic and are monetized, usually through affiliate sales. Identify your niche (such as baking, fashion, building websites, children, crafts, parenting, anything you enjoy doing and helping others do), create a blog through a self-hosting platform which will allow you to monetize it. Sites that are not self-hosted will not allow you to put affiliate links and banners on the site. So always start with a self-hosted site. I prefer WordPress.org and BlueHost as my host.
You apply for affiliates by creating a free account through ShareASale. Search for the companies or niche you’re looking for and then click Join. You will need to provide a paragraph or two of how you plan to incorporate their business or product into your blog. An approval or decline usually takes a few business days. If approved the company will furnish you the links needed to easily and quickly add to your site. Then when a reader clicks on your like and makes a purchase, the affiliate will pay you a portion of every sale through ShareASale. I love ShareASale because everything is in one convenient place…your sales, clicks, earnings, links and banner codes for all of your affiliates.

By only using the search engine as you normally would you can rack up quite a few gift card throughout the year. If you want to ramp up your earnings you can participate in the other offers as often as you’d like. You can also earn even more points by referring friends and family.

“Managing, designing or configuring cloud-based apps- ranging from social media and content management systems (like WordPress) to databases. I learned to administer salesforce.com databases for nonprofits and last year made $6,000-$15,000/month pretty consistently working from home. (The going rate for these services is $50-$200/hour) hat helped me was going through a self-study course on the platform, getting a couple of certifications, doing some spec work, then going out and asking clients if they needed my services. I call it “Learn, Slay It, Sell It.” Find out about growing trends, get up to speed then see if people will pay you to do it. If you become enough of an expert at it, they will! The nice thing is that it doesn’t have to be anything you studied in school, just something you studied on your own and mastered enough to be marketable.” – Aja McClanahan

EDITING and PROOFREADING – $$$
FILM WEDDINGS and EVENTS – $$
“One way that my wife and I made $5,000 in the past year on side income has been filming weddings. A year and a half ago we had no video experience. Once we bought a camera and posting videos, we’ve had friends and friends of friends start asking us to film their weddings. Most everything we learned about video came from asking other film peeps to show us the ropes or looking up “how-to” videos on Youtube. Since weddings are typically on the weekends, they really are an ideal side hustle. They don’t get in the way of our typical work week at all and they pay high margin. Once you have some film experience under your belt, you can charge $3-5k per wedding film, easily. If you’re interested in getting started filming weddings, I would recommend tagging along with an experienced shooter. From my experience, they are always looking for good help if you’ve got an eye for good shots and can work well under a little stress (there will be brides after all). This past fall we apprenticed and was well worth the long weekend shoots. We learned so much about shooting good wedding film and made a good amount of money in the process.” – Heath Padgett

With the popularity of photo cards from sites like Shutterfly, you can be a saving grace for families on a budget and you’d be surprised at how many folks you know who would hire a photographer in budget!” – Shannyn Allan

In 2014, Caitlin made slightly over $43,000 by being a freelance proofreader, while also going on several fun vacations. If you are looking for a way to make money on the side, this may be something you want to look into.
“Court reporters use digital stenography machines in combination with computer-aided transcription software to write verbatim records of various legal proceedings. They report depositions, trials, hearings, arbitrations, case management conferences, compulsory medical examinations, examinations under oath, and pretty much any other type of legal proceeding. Because of the sensitive nature of legal proceedings, it’s imperative that as many errors as possible be eliminated from transcripts — an especially major error could ruin an entire trial! A fresh set of eyes will 99% of the time catch more errors than the same eyes who saw the text from start to finish, too. An excellent proofreader is a huge asset to a court reporter — especially a court reporter who wants to make more money.” – Caitlin Pyle
